Your Easy Guide to Malta

Breathtaking views of the Maltese Islands at Majjistral Park

Il-Majjistral Park (pronounced Ma-yis-tral) is Malta’s first natural national park named after and located in the Northwest region of Malta. At its longest point, it is 6km along the coastline designated as Natura 2000, stretching from Golden Bay to Anchor Bay.

The park is full of natural and historical things to see all whilst enjoying some of the most breathtaking scenic views on the Maltese Islands. Here are some of the best ways to experience the park.

Take a walk around the park

A map of the Park can be obtained from the Visitor Centre or by visiting and shows a route with 5 optional starting points. Whilst on your walk you will see that the park is home to numerous Mediterranean plants (over 400 species) including ones that are endemic to the region of Malta.

During the walk, you can do some birdwatching and try to spot Malta’s national bird Blue Rock Thrush (Il-Merill) which breeds in the cliffs. And there are plenty of historical and archaeological remains to see including the British ex-military base, around 30 traditional stone huts (Girna), ancient quarries and cart ruts.

If you are going for a walk in the Summer months make sure you go after 6pm when it is cooler and you can watch the sunset against breathtaking views. Afterwards you can cool off with a swim at Golden Bay or simply enjoy the rest of the evening with a glass of wine at one of the popular bars by the sea. Majjistral Park sometimes organises guided walks – check their Facebook page for upcoming walks and events.

Try a snorkelling tour

In the summer months between July and September the park offers guided snorkelling tours in collaboration with Sharklab-Malta at Golden Bay which last 2.5 hours. You will experience a whole different world under water with lots of weird and wonderful fish and marine plants to gaze at.

The tours are for anyone aged 9+ and cost €10 for kids and €12 for adults which includes equipment. Bookings can be made by emailing [email protected].

Go horse riding

Golden Bay Horse Riding is an experienced company with stables located close to the Park that offers sunset and nature tracking rides within the Park for individual as well as group bookings.

The route takes you and your horse along the north-western coast and cliffs of Malta and offers picturesque views of the Maltese Islands.

Rides start from €20 depending on the chosen service booked. More information can be found on their website from

Enjoy a ride on a mountain bike

If you are a keen bike rider the Majjistral Park is the perfect place for some mountain biking providing perfect trails in a scenic, clean and pollution-free environment.

In fact, the Park is one of the Malta Mountain Bike Association’s favoured locations for mountain bike races and promote mountain biking as an eco-friendly sport.

Have a picnic

It is important for everyone to spend time in nature and studies are increasingly showing that this aids physical and mental well-being. Picnics are always great fun and create special memories for people.

All you need to do is to pack a few bites to eat and drink, and find a quiet space in the Park, surrounded by pleasant views and natural surroundings. Please remember to be nature conscious by picking up all of your rubbish and avoid single use disposable items.
