Christmas markets to visit in Malta

‘Tis the season to be jolly and with so many activities happening around Malta, it might be hard to decide which is the right one for you. From Christmas fairs, to Christmas carolling – here are some highlights which are worth a visit if you are in Malta during the Christmas period.

Natalis Notabilis

Situated in the heart of Rabat, close to Malta’s old capital city Mdina, this Christmas Fair is a delight due to its historic location and will run from December 11-15. The fair is set along several cobbled, pedestrianised streets where you can enjoy a cup of mulled wine and warmed chestnuts. It is also a great place to get some unique Christmas gifts with a traditional local twist. But wrap up warm when visiting this event since it gets cold due to the city’s higher altitude.

Sliema Christmas Market

Located in the heart of one of Malta’s most popular shopping spots in Bisazza Street, Sliema, this fair promises a weekend of entertainment coupled with several shopping opportunities. The market will run from December 6-8 and will include a special visit from Father Christmas in addition to a wide range of stalls selling local produce, seasonal food, organic wines and a variety of seasonal gifts.

The Malta International Christmas Choir Festival

Taking place between December 5-9, the event will see the participation of 27 choirs, both local and international, in a variety of churches around the island some of which include: The Nativity of Our Lady Collegiate Church in Naxxar, Our Lady of the Grotto Church in Rabat and St Paul’s Cathedral in Rabat. The final night takes place on Sunday December 8 at the Mosta Basilica Church. The event is a great opportunity to visit the unique churches of Malta whilst enjoying choir singing during the festive period. For more information on dates and locations visit

Christmas Village

The Valletta Waterfront is organising a Christmas Village which is ideal if you’re travelling with kids in tow. The event, taking place from December 1, will see face-painting, balloon modelling, bouncy castles, puppet shows, choirs and a 35-foot Christmas tree. You can also take photos with Santa and his helpers.

If you’re in Gozo for the festive season…

Christmas cheer and merriment can also be found in Gozo at La Magia di Natale which is being held in the picturesque village of Munxar. The event will host a variety of stalls selling homemade goods, mulled wine and seasonal gifts. Entertainment for children will also be available with a play area, live music and a special visit from Santa. Entrance is free.
